Pool Parties!
Among New York’s abundance of free summer shows, Dirty Projectors performed to rabid onlookers in Williamsburg as part of JellyNYC’s Pool Parties.
Initially formed as a solo vehicle for David Longstreth’s intricate compositions, the project soon evolved into a full-fledged band with a rapidly changing cast of members. Currently, it features a total of six, though Longstreth still remains the obvious leader.
The Brooklyn band has since captivated audiences with their avant-pop with several releases, but their newest, Bitte Orca, recently brought about an escalating wave of hype.
The album contains a cohesive collection of songs brimming with such careful detail and complexity that the listening experience is never dull. In fact, the unexpected is happily expected; erratic swerves and spurts of changes are commonly found, leading each tune into surprising directions. Sudden explosions of female harmonies, Longstreth’s skilled guitar work, and crooning vocals against continuous bursts of electronic experimentation await first-time and repeat listeners alike.
Dirty Projectors presents a fresh perspective to the indie music scene that has swiftly enchanted the masses. Even Kanye West blogged their video making it clear that 2009 is their year.
