Marry Me
St. Vincent, one-time backup guitarist for various indie bands turned patron saint of electric guitars, brought her full pre-Coachella lineup to the Echoplex in Los Angeles last Friday.
I must admit, looking at St. Vincent's track list from her debut album "Marry Me" didn't leave me too confident to flood my last.fm account with her songs. Tracks titled "Marry Me", "Your Lips Are Red", and "Jesus Saves, I Spend" had me a little worried about the implications such songs would have on my playlist.
Dude: "Hey Darren, what are you listening to?"
Me: "Marry Me"
Dude: "Ha Ha" (Nelson from The Simpsons)
After seeing her live, however, I'm proud to have St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) on the top of my charts any week of the year.
If you asked me to describe Annie Clark before the show, I would've said, "fragile, innocent, and sweet".
However, her performance at The Echoplex displayed outright confidence, bravado, and utter ownage of her guitar. Her stage presence, execution, vocals, and mastery of guitar harmonics was absolutely flawless in every way.
So I guess you can say I've been converted.
If she's stopping by your town, go check her out. See her live, now. Just be sure to get in the correct line for will-call or tickets. The other line will most likely be for marriage proposals.
