Way Out !
Heavy Trash is Jon Spencer's (of Blues Explosion fame) rockabilly project. After their first album, which was entirely recorded by Jon and his partner-in-crime Matt Verta-Ray (Speedball Baby, Madder Rose), their second record Going Way Out with Heavy Trash is the result of several sessions across the world. It features musicians from The Sadies, Powersolo, and Tremolo Beergut giving the record a genuine mix of rockabilly, Americana, and the exploded blues that is Heavy Trash.
Jon Spencer gave an impeccable performance in Paris after having been sick for most of the day. Who would've guessed that vomiting repeatedly for an hour before the gig would've resulted in such an energetic performance on stage? Obviously possessed by the demon of rock'n roll, Spencer looked and sounded like an epileptic preacher, showing off his crooner-looking alter ego while being supported by The Sadies (who didn't look slightly tired even after opening for Spencer and playing for almost three hours non-stop every night).
The Parisian audience was mesmerized, but also quite perplexed by Spencer's rants (the NY accent being obviously quite difficult to grasp for most of them). However, Spencer was oblivious to most of it. People in the first row began to regret not having an umbrella to shield themselves from his banter since Jon's ability to fascinate crowds with his haunting speeches caused severe spluttering. But I guess an errant spit wad from Jon Spencer is a bit like a musical baptism in a way. And it certainly works as everyone after the gig is a firm believer in the gods of rockabilly and punk…
Don't miss this tight and exhilarating act if they're in your neck of woods!
