Emily Jane White - Liza

Liz Caruso

Emily Jane White's track Liza off her upcoming second album, Victorian America (due out in the US April 27), is dark and haunting. It includes a melancholic arrangement of strings, acoustic guitar, and drum beats toward the end to add extra emphasis to the song's conclusion. Combined with White's deep, ethereal singing voice and lyrics that paint descriptive scenes and reference death, the song is nestled somewhere between depressing and eerie. And yet, there seems to be something hopeful in the way she sings the lyric "I'll see you/I'll see you again".

When taking into consideration White's general intentions and outlook on the kind music she believes she's meant to write, the overall effect of the song makes sense.

via press release:

White has no patience with light fare. “I don't write happy music. I'm drawn to writing sad songs”, she says. “Reflective, contemplative songs. I truly believe that that's my job. It's not my job to create happy music. I'm okay with that.”

Consider me on board. I personally can't get enough of crafty female singer/songwriters with a knack for writing songs that make you want to close your eyes and immerse yourself in the music. Check out Liza below!
