It's a time of change for Au Revoir Simone, as Heather D'Angelo returns to school and as Annie Hart announces her pregnancy to audiences as the girls continue their tour. Despite the hiatus that will ensue due to two-thirds of the group being absent, it didn't feel like a farewell as they giggled on stage Thursday night at the Echoplex about the likelihood of Annie's baby becoming an honorary member of the band.
"But what if the baby's a boy?" Annie questioned, which caused the remaining girls to jokingly turn their noses up and playfully refuse the idea that her child could be anything less than a future female keyboardist extraordinaire. Don't worry, though, after a few moments of laughter and pause they reassured their bandmate that gender didn't matter.
Technical difficulties raged rampant throughout the night - in one short moment of panic, Heather even believed her keyboard to be broken - but the girls handled the technical troubles with ease and charm. The group, armed with their set-up of keyboards lined up next to each other, Heather equipped with her drum machine and cymbal and Erika with her tambourine, played a lovely set filled with songs mostly consisting of their newest album, Still Night, Still Light and their most recent after that, The Bird of Music. The three play on stage with innocent, girlish charisma and dreamy expressions as they exchange smiles and whispers with each other.
For the encore, the trio closed out the night with a cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer", a great rendition that I ended up liking better than the original, which is a difficult feat for me as a die-hard Eagles fan.
