Bang For Your Buck
Once in a while a band comes along that’s hard not to like. We Are Scientists has been one of those bands since they arrived on the scene thanks to their hit track Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt and their subsequent indie club anthem The Great Escape.
Keith Murray (vocals & guitar) and Chris Cain (bass & backing vocals) are the remaining original members of the band following the departure of their drummer Michael Tapper. Since then, they've added a new drummer and an additional guitarist/keyboardist to their touring lineup. They kicked off the night with their new single and a few choice cuts from their first album With Love and Squalor.
Always with a sense of humour, the band chatted with the audience between songs. Keith teased the ladies by offering to take off his shirt after the sixth song, and Chris joked that a lot had changed since their last visit to Galway, “You've now got electricity”.
After the opening batch of older songs, Chris teased the sold out crowd again, “So...We have a new album out now.” The crowd cheered in anticipation to hear a track off their new oddly titled album Brain Thrust Mastery (out in the UK now).
“This is off our first record,” he said with a wry grin.
On the tiny stage, Keith and Chris playfully fought with each other while never missing a beat. At one point, Keith told the crowd to get closer to their partners during one of their slower songs only to upstage any guy’s chances by jumping into the crowd and causing a riotous reaction by the girls in the audience.
And in typical We Are Scientists style, instead of leaving the stage before their encore, the band used the opportunity to have their fans to cheer for them while they gleefully watched on. Eventually, they finished the night with a new song Lethal Enforcer (a song that hints at 80s new romanticism) and fan favourite The Great Escape.
With a free comedy act included in their live performance, you're definitely getting more value for your ticket price. Catch them as soon as you can.
