This past Saturday night in LA was filled with an exorbitant amount of dancing and fun –- if you were in attendance of Hercules and Love Affair's show at the Echoplex, that is.
While most attendees waited for the headliners around the bar and tables located nearer the back of the venue, DJ Paul V. got the ass-shaking started by playing an eclectic mix of dance tunes. The selection ranged from M.I.A to reworked versions of classic pop songs, my favorite of the bunch being an Allure remix of The Beatles' "And I Love Her". I approve!
Teen Inc. then took the stage for a chilled out set of their saxophone-infused lo-fi music. Their style harkens comparisons to both music from the 80's and funky jam bands from way back when. The mix of aesthetics is a pretty interesting combination.
However, nothing that night could compare to the moment Hercules and Love Affair began performing. The crowd packed in even tighter, and the instant choreography and energy of the three vocalists up front was wholly commanding – at times hypnotic. While the mastermind behind the project DJ Andy Butler worked in the background, there wasn't a moment's rest in the performers' movements. Whether it be waving their hands around in the air, jumping up and down, or just plain getting down, there was rarely ever a lull of dancing or smiles.
The crowd mimicked the energy of the band on stage as well – jostling around, throwing their arms up in the air, and all around just obviously having a good time. Although Hercules and Love Affair is best known for their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, they performed a multitude of new songs that night, which is just a taste of what's to come off a soon to come new release. Until then, we definitely shouldn't stop dancing.
