New Music: Alex Winston - "Choice Notes"

August 17, 2010

Liz Caruso

This may seem strange, but... when I first listened to Alex Winston's first 7" single "Choice Notes", I thought she sounded like a quirky mermaid singing underneath the waves of some tropical ocean.

Turns out Alex is actually a human (who happens to be a classicly trained opera singer, as well) from Detroit, rather than a sea-dwelling siren, but that doesn't make the textural effects she applies to her voice in the aforementioned song any less interesting. So therefore, if you like girls who sound like mermaids when they sing and cite Feist and Lykke Li as their musical influences, I highly recommend listening to "Choice Notes" below.

Also, Heavy Roc Music is offering a free download of Alex's The Basement Covers EP, which is a collection of cover songs - including covers of "Play With Fire" by The Rolling Stones and "The Cave" by Mumford & Sons - played by and recorded entirely by Alex in her basement. Head over here to grab it!
