Once I finally had a listen, it struck me as no surprise that Forget, Twin Shadow's 2010 debut album, had generated an abundance of acclamations since its release. My only question: why in the hell did I not discover this music sooner? Facepalm, epic fail, etcetera.
George Lewis, Jr. is the man behind the elusive moniker of Twin Shadow, and he makes exactly my shade of synth-laden, retro vibed tracks. Born in the Dominican Republic, raised in an obscure, secluded town of Florida, he eventually relocated to Brooklyn just around five years ago. His origins seem particularly fitting to me, seeing as the tunes seem like humid, sun-drenched morsels after being dunked in the cold, hazy atmosphere of a New York winter. Plentiful nostalgic vibes are nestled between the chords, helped along by 80s-esque synth and guitar lines, heavy-hitting drum beats and fluid, lush vocals.
Point is, don't make the same stupid mistake and wait around to have your first listen.
On day three of Chicago's Tomorrow Never Knows mini-festival, Twin Shadow played a headlining gig at Schubas, and our photographer Rory O'Connor was there to capture photos of their performance.
