LA's Tom & Jerry
Embraced by local stalwarts such as LA Record, Hecuba brought their whimsical minimalism to a somewhat bewildered Bat For Lashes crowd at The El Rey Theatre.
Thanks to do-it-yourself music venues such as The Smell, Los Angeles has been churning out some unusual experimental bands not afraid to break free from the same ol' sounds playing out of Sunset and Silverlake Blvds.
Both visually and musically, Hecuba look and sound like the bastard love children of The Fiery Furnaces and The Kills. They are somewhat theatrical and purposefully mysterious while maintaining a fun and energetic presence on stage.
From their standout track Suffering — along with its video which has to be seen — to the quirky Tom & Jerry, Hecuba represents one of LA's best hopes in the never-ending pursuit of viewing music as art.
Catch them at The Smell in downtown Los Angeles — August 28, 2009.
